A Note from Andrea

Hi, welcome to the third my widowed friends newsletter. I’m Andrea. I founded mwf and write these monthly newsletters to share what’s happening across our growing community.

Group News

These groups will all be running by the end of November: Truro, Bude, St Austell, Camborne, Helston, Falmouth, Newquay, Launceston, Liskeard and Penzance. Hayle group is postponed until a few more members join.

These groups should start in December: Saltash, Redruth and Wadebridge.

These groups don’t yet have enough members to schedule a date: Bodmin, Callington, Penryn, Torpoint, St Blazey/Par, and St Ives. I know there are a few members who are waiting for these groups and I hope you will hang on until we have enough members in your area to start. If rather than waiting you want to transfer to another group then let me know.

Working Members and Younger Members

It can be difficult for younger members, and members who still work, to access a local weekday group. So we are starting a group for them in January, provided there is enough demand. This will be in Truro on Saturday mornings. If you want to put your name down then contact Andrea with your name, age, location and contact details. You can’t yet join this group via the website.

Ways to Help Your Group Grow mwf

Please publicise the group so that more people know about us.

  • Put up posters- members will already have 3 posters, please put these up somewhere. If anyone else wants posters then just email Andrea.
  • Follow our Facebook page (1) Facebook and share some of our posts to your friends.
  • Talk about us! If you know anyone widowed, or who cares about someone widowed, then tell them about us.

 Your Ideas

If you have any ideas for the groups then email me. A few things that people have already suggested:

Q: Can we have a weekend group for people that work?

A: Yes- the new Truro group for younger and working members is the result of questions from members.

Q: Can people visit other groups as well as their own?

A: Not at the moment, but I am thinking about how we could make this work for 2026.

Q: Can we have a WhatsApp group?

A: Yes- not for chat, because your phones would be pinging all day. But I have set one up as an extra to the emails I send out, a one way channel for announcements to members. Lots of people don’t check emails regularly and might find this easier. You could also have a WhatsApp group just for your local mwf group. This should be organised in your weekly coffee meeting.

Do you have any other ideas for me to think about?

Members- Outing of the Month

Some of you will be getting to know your fellow group members better by now. Why not think about suggesting an outing? One that is easy to arrange is to a local event, maybe a charity fair or community day. Just arrange a time and place to meet and wander round the event as a group. It can be much more fun than going alone. Maybe swap phone numbers in case anyone is delayed.

A quick warning though: don’t change your regular coffee group day, time or venue. Anyone new or anyone who missed coffee when you made the change, wouldn’t know the arrangements and would be left sat on their own. Any changes to the regular weekly meeting must be made by Andrea, to avoid these sort of problems.
