Why Organise an Outing?
Outings are an enjoyable way to get to know people better, have fun, and make happy new memories. These could be meals out, garden visits, cinema trips, market days, pub quizzes, whatever you enjoy doing that other members might enjoy too.
You don't need to be the group organiser to arrange something. Anyone in the group can take the lead for an outing.
Key Principles
- Kindness and inclusion - outings should be open to everyone in the group
- Mention it at the coffee group so everyone hears at the same time
- Be clear about where, when, how much, and how to join in
Payments & Bookings
- Explain clearly about any costs and deadlines
- For some outings like theatre or cinema trips you might need to do a group booking to sit together. Only book for people after you have received their payments. You can collect payments however is easiest - cash or PayPal often work well.
- For some outings, where a booking isn't necessary, you can ask everyone to pay their own expenses on the day.
Safety and Practicalities
- Only plan what you're happy managing
- Make sure everyone knows exactly where and when to meet
- If you are willing to let people have your mobile phone number, this might be helpful if they are running late or have to cancel last minute
- Mention accessibility, walking distance, and any transport info
- Make it clear that people are all responsible for their own safety throughout the outing
Don't Be Shy!
Even small outings can build real friendships. If one idea doesn't take off, try another. People will appreciate it. The easiest outings to arrange are ones where you don't need to book and collect payments, so maybe start with a walk or a visit somewhere.
